The course presents through lectures and discussion a range of theories concerned with the meaning of architecture in society.

The essay and the group work should be able to demonstrate that the students have achieved: Students are also asked to work in groups, forming research teams with related topics. The primary outcome of the course is an individual essay based on a clearly investigated theoretical position discussed in the lectures and chosen by the student. The course aims to make students familiar with a range of theoretical propositions through a course of lectures and allow them to test these against a number of examples of architectural practice and urban phenomena. Awareness of diverse thinkers and methods, from inside and outside architecture, is now considered a necessary part of an architect’s training as a stimulus to creativity and a means of being able to articulate a critical position. Since the 1960s, theory has played an increasingly important role in architectural thought and practice.
